2023 Black History Month Scholarship Winners Announced

In recognition of Black History Month, Cumberland Family Medical Center, Inc., and the FMC Community Foundation are pleased to present scholarships to 12 local African American high school students in our service area who have expressed their desire to attend a post-secondary institution and major in a health-related field of study.
Congratulations to these students who will receive a $1000 scholarship in recognition of Black History Month and in honor of Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first black American to work as a professionally trained nurse in the United States and Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, Viral Immunologist and Research Scientist, who played a central role in the research effort to develop a COVID-19 vaccine in record time.
Tyra Belle is a senior at Marion County High School and plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University to specialize in clinical psychology. She has participated in marching band, canned food drives, highway litter clean up, and has been a member of a church youth group for 13 years. Tyra is part of the National Honor Society and enjoys reading, writing, and playing the trumpet.
Taliya Spalding is a senior at Marion County High School who is a member of the Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and the National Honor Society. She enjoys playing chess, listening to music, traveling, and writing. Taliya plans to attend Bluegrass Community & Technical College with the goal of becoming an occupational therapist.
Cecilia Jones is a senior at Martha Layne Collins High School. Throughout high school, she has competed in varsity softball and football, receiving the Titan of the Year award and most improved player award. Cecilia participated in Beta Club, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club, National Honor Society, and the Link Crew Program. She also volunteers with the Shelby County Historical Society. Cecilia plans to attend the University of Tennessee to pursue a career in physical therapy or as a healthcare assistant.
Makiya McNear, pictured, senior at Frankfort High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Spanish National Honor Society, Student Council, and Y Club. She has received several awards including 4.0 honor roll, Making a Difference Everyday (MADE), Sources of Strength, Gear Up Ambassador, honors in English and Algebra, and was selected to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Training. Makiya enjoys participating in the South Frankfort Presbyterian Church Youth Group, reading, baking, and making visual boards using Pinterest. She plans to attend the University of Kentucky to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor.
Jazmin Chambers is a senior at Franklin County High School. She is a 2021-2022 Kentucky Youth Salute Program participant and a 2023 OH-KY All Star, which showcases the best senior basketball players in Ohio and Kentucky. She has competed in varsity basketball, volleyball, and as a member of the French Club. She enjoys participating with groups at her church, singing, art, drawing, and painting. Jazmin has been accepted into several schools and universities throughout Kentucky and plans to become a physical therapist or ultrasound technician.
LaMya Wordlow is a senior at Bardstown High School and plans to attend the University of Louisville to become a nurse. She has competed in volleyball and participates in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club and Junior Optimist International. LaMya enjoys reading and baking.
Sakrya Minion is a senior at Anderson County High School and has been recognized with an academic award as a freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. She has competed in varsity volleyball throughout high school. Sakrya plans to attend the University of Louisville to focus on the study of physical therapy and athletic training.
Arianna Poe is a senior at John Hardin High School and plans to attend the University of Louisville to become a physician. She has participated in Feeding America. Tyra has been recognized for A-B Honor Roll and enjoys traveling and puzzles.
Amiah Moses is a senior at John Hardin High School and is a member of Feeding America, Pep Club, and is active in youth ministry. She is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and CPR certified. Amiah enjoys working, reading, and shopping. She plans to attend the University of Louisville to pursue a career in nursing.
Nakhyia Staten is a senior at Warren East High School. Throughout high school, she has participated in track and field, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club, Black History Month planning, and the Green Dot Program. Nakhyia enjoys teaching Sunday school, majorette dance, praise dance, and photography. She plans to attend Western Kentucky University with the goal of becoming a pediatric physician.
Kendra Coe, senior at Cumberland County High School, is a member of the varsity basketball team, Beta Club, Pep Club, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has received several awards including the KHSAA Academic Award, A-B Honor Roll, and the Lady Panther Most Improved Award. Kendra enjoys, volunteer work, and traveling. She plans to attend the University of Louisville to study pediatric nursing or radiology.
A’Nivyah Pearson is a senior at Warren East High School and plans to attend Western Kentucky University to become a nurse. She has competed in basketball and track & field and has been recognized as Raider of the Month. A’Nivyah enjoys participating in the multi-city choir.
The FMC Community Foundation, is a nonprofit, supporting organization established with the mission to meet the physical and mental health needs of individuals and communities within CFMC’s service area through outreach, engagement, and monetary assistance. The Foundation focuses on several items including providing assistance and opportunities for students interested in pursuing a healthcare career; enabling students to make healthy decisions through increased education and resources; and increasing access to everyday necessities. The FMC Community Foundation is a valued partner organization of CFMC and strives to improve and support the over-all health status and health opportunities for our patients and communities.
